The skater dress, though it isn’t new to fashion,
is still as much in fashion as ever.  This style was designed in the
1980’s with a flaring circle skirt and form-fitting sleeveless bodice,
much like that of a figure skater’s costume (hence the name!) The
necklines are high and rounded, and some are plain while others are
accentuated with gentle neckline pleats. Because of the fullness and
folds in the skirt, it performs nicely in a dance twirl!
Typically, skater dresses are
designed in brighter colors and patterns such as reds, blues, yellows
and print combinations thereof.  Darker hues, such as navy and black,
have also become a popular color choice also. Although focus is mainly
on the soft flow of the skirt, the style of this dress compliments and
attracts the eye to your best features, head to toe. Many popular
celebrities around the globe have been photographed sporting a skater
dress, including First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama.
This little dress has played a ‘basic’ role in women’s wardrobes for
many years. Changes in the hemline along the way have made them
attractive to middle age and older women also because the longer
knee-length style allow them to be worn in more professional and formal
settings. In 2012, the midi-length style became popular during cooler
temperatures, and long sleeves were added for extra warmth. Skater dresses look great when accessorised with jewellery; even larger pieces
that sometimes appear 'clunky' with other styles look great with a
skater dress. It easily pairs with opaque tights and flat heeled or
higher heeled shoes to dress down or pump up the look.
The simple and classic design of this little dress has proven itself
over and over again as a select choice in the fashion world, and one
that will be featured for many years to come!
